Is there a way to restore ping between n-minutes?

What do you mean?
With client 6.2.9, in server administration (windows server 6.0.7), clients don’t show if they are connected, because latest version don’t ping server every 5 minutes (see changelog).
It would useful to set manually interval (of ping) in order to see connected clients.

There are other requests like “/api2/repos” that are still refreshed periodically. What’s more IIRC in the admin device management page you can see each device’s last access time.
