Playback of .mkv videos in Firefox (Linux)

Hi,

Mozilla recently added the possibility to play .mkv video files directly in Firefox: Mozilla Firefox Officially Gets MKV Video Playback Support

I’m using Firefox v146 on Linux right now and when I open an .mkv video file in Firefox, it is successfully played by Firefox. So that confirms that my Firefox installation can indeed play .mkv video files.

However, when I click on the name of an .mkv file in my Seafile Server webpage, I get the message saying that viewing this file is not possible online, with a button to download the file instead.

My Seafile Server is running on v11.0.13. Am I getting this message because I didn’t update the server to the v13? Or does the issue come from something else?

Thanks & kind regards.

This is because the video.js we used does not support .mkv yet. We will take a look at it.

After investigation, mkv is not widely supported yet. We don’t have a plan to add support for it yet.

Do you mean that MKV should be supported on all the main browsers and all the main operating systems before Seafile can support it?

Yes. Otherwise there will be browser detection code needed, we don’t want to add such code.
